**Ars Technica: Why do dynamic languages make it difficult to maintain large codebases?

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2014/06/why-do-dynamic-languages-make-it-difficult-to-maintain-large-codebases/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+arstechnica%2Findex+%28Ars+Technica+-+All+content%29

Yevgeniy Brikman (lead developer bringing the Play Framework to LinkedIn) has said in a video at JaxConf2014 that large code bases are hard to maintain if they're written in dynamically typed languages.

Ars Technica explores why this might be the case, including a response from Brikman. The gist seems to be that large codebases are hard to maintain anyway, but dynamic languages make it harder, because, for example:

They don't have a compiler that detects certain kinds of errors, instead you have to write test suites to do the same thing.

Many of them are allow code to be self-modifying

They are often - although not necessarily - weaker in organisational features such as namespaces (e.g. javascript and php)
